Responsibilities
The Senior Director, Claims is responsible for handling the most complex, high exposure and high severity claims for all BHFL primary and excess lines of business including: Director's and Officer's Liability, Employment Practices Liability, Fiduciary Liability, Fidelity/Crime and Managed Care Errors and Omissions. This role serves as a senior technical expert and escalation resource within the BHFL Claims organization, providing guidance and oversight on challenging coverage, liability and resolution issues. In addition to managing a portfolio of complex matters, the Senior Director will provide mentoring and will partner with Claims leadership to design and implement training, best practices, and claim handling procedures. The Senior Director will work closely with underwriters and general counsel in support of product development, underwriting strategy, and marketing efforts. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the technical excellence and future growth of the Berkley Healthcare Financial Lines Claims function.
Key functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Handle complex and high severity primary and excess healthcare-related Director's & Officer's Liability, Employment Liability, Fiduciary Liability, Crime and Errors & Omissions Claims
- Serve as a technical expert and escalation resource for complex coverage, litigation, and claim resolution issues across the Claims organization
- Provide mentorship and coaching as needed to more junior team members
- Assist in the development and delivery of training programs, claim handling protocols, and best practices to ensure consistent technical excellence across the team
- Partner with Claims leadership to enhance procedures, workflows, and claim strategies, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
- Draft coverage documents including reservation of rights letters, large loss reports and other internal claim related documents
- Comply with Best Practices guidelines and other company claim handling requirements regarding communication, investigation, litigation management, coverage evaluation, exposure assessment, and settlement/resolution.
- Collaborate with underwriting, legal, and senior leadership on emerging risks and portfolio-level claim trends
- Engage in projects or other responsibilities/tasks outside of direct claim handling as needed.
- Actively maintain advanced expertise as to industry and insurance trends including exposures, claims, legal, legislative, healthcare, current events, self-improvement and innovation
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree requred
- 10+ years' experience handling complex or high severity claims in one or more of BHFL's lines of business (D&O, EPL, Fiduciary, Crime, Managed Care E&O)
- Demonstrated expertise with insurance contract interpretation and coverage issues
- Experience serving as a technical resource, mentor, or leader within a claims organization
- Healthcare financial lines claims experience strongly preferred

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role include:
• Base Salary Range: $110,000 – $200,000
• Eligible to participate in annual discretionary bonus.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
